Local History

The practice is located in downtown Juanita near the shore of Lake Washington in Kirkland.

Native Americans camped on the edges of Lake Washington for centuries. They favored Juanita Bay because of plentiful wapatos, a type of wetland potato that grew at the lakes edge. The pioneer, Dorr Forbes, moved to Juanita from Rose Hill, where he built and operated a shingle mill that met the demands of local homesteaders.

In June of 1888, Peter Kirk announced his intention to build a steel works on the eastern shores of the lake. Kirk was an established steel mill owner in Workington, England. Plentiful water, coal and iron ore in the Cascades inspired him.  Plans for local rail lines and a canal between Lake Washington and Puget Sound were not completed and this combined with the economic collapse of 1893 effectively thwarted his dream.

Lake Washington Shipyards was established at the turn of the century at the present location of Carillon Point. The local shipyard first built ferries for travelers crossing Lake Washington, establishing Kirkland as a gateway to Seattle. Later, the shipyard built 29 ships for the Navy and repaired nearly 500 vessels over the course of the war.

War fortunes helped established the thriving city. It is now is home to numerous large and small businesses and is a major residential and cultural center on the Puget Sounds Eastside.

The Juanita practice location is a short walk from the local Starbucks, (Dr Saunders second office) restaurants and retail stores and is on the bus line.  The area has a mix of retail, professional offices and high density residential.  The City of Kirkland has a number of parks and green spaces nearby.  Dr Saunders shares office space at the invitation of Dr. James Reeder at the professional business park in the Reeder Chiropractic Center.
